Valerie Selig Barnhorst

Valerie Ann Selig Barnhorst, age 63, a life resident of Marysville, died peacefully Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Hospice at Riverside Kobacker House. Despite living with her cancer diagnosis since 2014, Valerie’s typical uplifting spirit and encouraging charm allowed her to triumph daily. Born and raised in Marysville, she was a shining example of fortitude, Christian faith and friendship. A 1977 graduate of Marysville High School, Valerie was a longtime insurance office manager/agent for Nuckles/Sehnert Insurance in Marysville. She began her career shortly after high school graduation and continued to help her clients until just a few weeks before her passing. She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was baptized on January 25, 1959 and confirmed her faith on April 15, 1973. She was a member of St. John’s Ladies Aid, the church catering committee and sang in the ladies’ ensemble, “First Review.” She and her husband, Barney, created and organized the church auto valet program. During high school, she participated in marching and concert band as a flute player. During the early 1980’s she helped organized the Marysville Community Concert Band and played in many community theater pit orchestras. A devoted friend to many, she was known around her hometown for her well-maintained orange 1971 Mustang Mach I, her “classic trademark” since her teens. She was an original member of Mid-Ohio Cruisers. Val enjoyed baking and decorating scores and scores of cakes for all types of celebrations and events. A deeply dedicated wife and mother, she proudly attended all of her son’s many athletic and school events. She enjoyed her pet cats and will be remembered for her neighborliness, hospitality and passion for giving to others, never expecting anything in return. Even in times of ailing health, her hearty laugh uplifted those around her. She was born December 28, 1958 in Marysville to the late George and Jeanette Blumenschein Selig. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott and Jeff Selig; a half-brother, “Skip” Selig; and a brother-in-law, Gregory Barnhorst.
