The Population Explosion: Union County Grows 20% in 10 Years


According to the most recent numbers released by the U.S. Census, Union County’s population over the past decade skyrocketed as there are now 20 percent more people in the county than there were just ten years ago.

The 2020 Census shows that 62,784 people currently call Union County their home, compared to 2010 when the county counted 53,300 people within its borders. The bullish growth of the county makes Union not only one of the fastest growing counties in the State of Ohio, but one of the fastest growing communities in the entire United States.

For comparison, the population of the United States grew by 7.4 percent to 331,449,281, the State of Ohio grew by 2.3 percent to 11,799,448 over the past ten years.

The push to get local residents to complete their census forms also worked as Union County had the most improved Self-Response rate of all of Ohio’s 88 counties, jumping almost six percent from the 2010 census and into the top spot.

The population of Dublin in Union County has risen on an explosive scale, having grown from 2,366 people o 4,344 in 10 years, an amazing 83.6 percent increase.

The Union County population of Plain City, however, dropped over 11 percent from 828 to 730, keeping in mind that a large part of Plain City is located in Madison County, so the overall numbers for Plain City are not represented by this change.

Magnetic Springs also saw a drop in its population in 10 years … by one person. The official population of Magnetic Springs in 2021 was 268, in 2020, the population is now 267, a decrease of 0.4 percent.

In the unincorporated areas, Jerome Township has by far the most residents, thanks to a massive 101.8 percent influx in population over the past decade from 4,347 to 8,774.

Washington Township is the least populated with 812 residents.
