RICHWOOD – Down by three, 30-27, at the break to visiting Jonathan Alder, North Union shut the Pioneers down in the second half, allowing the visitors just six points in the final two periods – three points apiece in each quarter – in posting a 42-36 win in a Central Buckeye Conference-crossover girls varsity basketball game Friday.
Neither team shot particularly well from the field – Jonathan Alder was 13-of-39 for 33 percent and North Union was 13-of-43 for 30 percent – but the Pioneers hit a blazing 50 percent from 3-point land on 7-of-14 shooting. North Union was 5-for-16 from downtown for 31 percent, but the Ladycats made their money at the foul line, sinking 11-of-19 attempts from the line, while the Pioneers connected on only 3-of-12 tries from the charity stripe.
Jonathan Alder’s Evan Platfoot score a game high 18 points, going 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Ashley Bentley had a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.
Zoe Wedding was the spark plug of the Ladycats, scoring 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbing six rebounds. Allison Price had eight points and Abbey Price scored six, picked up four steals and had six boards for the winners.
North Union is now 8-2 on the season and are a perfect 4-0 and atop the CBC Mad River Division standings. Jonathan Alder falls to 4-5 on the season but remains 2-1 in the CBC Kenton Trail Division.
Now that the holidays are over, one can expect to see both squads in a lot of action on the hardwood in the next month.
Jonathan Alder next hosts non-league rival West Liberty-Salem Tuesday at JAHS at 7:30 p.m., while North Union hosts Buckeye Valley, again in a non-league match, Wednesday at 6 p.m.
